Bhubaneswar, July 25: The Odisha cabinet on Thursday cleared two major investment proposals totaling of about Rs 3600 crore for improvement of power infrastructure in the state.
The first proposal concerns about establishment of 520 units of 33/11KV new grid sub-stations across the state. It entails and investment of Rs 2600 crore.
Each grid substation will provide quality power with an area of 30 km.
The second proposal aims at providing “reliable” and “quality” power to agriculture and allied sectors. Under the programme, at least 1000 11KV agri-feeders will be established farmers will be at a cost of Rs 1000 crore, chief secretary Jugal Kishore Mohapatra told reporters after the Cabinet meeting.
Each 11KV agri-feeder will cater to the requirement of consumers within a maximum distance of 20 km, thereby addressing the problem of low-voltage and other related disturbances.
The cost of the two projects would be met from the state plan, the CS said.
Both the projects will be completed within a period of three years. Once successfully executed, the transmission and distribution (T&D) loss which now stands at a staggering 40 per cent will be reduced to 37 per cent.
“According to an estimate, a reduction of 1 per cent in T&D loss saves at least Rs 80 crore. We hope to save at least Rs 250 crore after execution of the two projects,” energy secretary P.K. Jena said.
Apart from supplying power to lift irrigation points and bore-wells, the 11KV feeder will cater to the electricity requirement of cold-storages, ice-factories and agri-processing units.
State-run Odisha Power Transmission Corporation Limited (OTPCL) will have the proprietary rights over the projects, the CS said.
The energy secretary Mr Jena said the state has at present 573 substations as against a requirement of 1200 substations.
“Works for construction of 100 substations are underway and they would be completed soon,” the energy secretary said, adding, land had been acquired for all the substation projects.
Mr Jena said detailed project report (DPR) for 350 substations were already ready.
The energy secretary informed that pre-paid system of power purchase by consumers would be introduced in the state soon.
Sources said Rs 200 crore has been allocated in the current year’s budget for execution of the projects.
